The Untraditional Couples Guide to a Unique Wedding Day

If you’re anything like me you love the idea of a super untraditional wedding day. So why not plan your day to be exactly that? (and then bring me along to document it.)

The pressure to plan a traditional wedding, with a cookie cutter timeline is so real. So I’m here to give you the courage and guidance to plan a unique wedding day.

What about a brunch wedding followed by mimosas and waffles? Or a surprise wedding? Or an entire wedding weekend full of fun activities for your guests? Or you could opt to do a private elopement at a super rad venue with just the two of you. The possibilities are endless and I am here to help you plan something special and unique! This blog post is full on unique ideas to make your wedding day one-of-a-kind.

Concepts:

  • Throw a surprise wedding

  • Set a really fun dress code for your guests like all black, high fashion, straight off the runway, Met Gala, floral, rock n' roll, or 70's inspired.

  • Hire a drag queen instead of a traditional officiant or emcee.

  • Forget the traditional timeline and start your wedding off with cocktail hour and casually transition into your ceremony after that, followed by a late dinner under the stars.

  • Plan a Vegas themed elopement with an Elvis impersonator as your officiant.

  • Plan a kitschy valentines day elopement, complete with a '“kissing booth” photo booth, a red & pink dress code, and fun themed cocktails.

  • Plan a Halloween wedding and ask your guests to wear a fun costume.

  • Brunch wedding followed by mimosas and waffles.

  • Plan an adventure elopement that require unconventional travel to get to, like hiking, canoeing, boating, or by helicopter.

  • Plan a super fun destination wedding like Vegas, Mexico, or Ibiza. (PS. I offer some really amazing packages for destination weddings.)

  • A 4/20 friendly wedding with a weed bar for your guests to partake in.

    Guest Entertainment:

  • Hire an onsite tattoo artist to come to your cocktail hour (talk about a wedding favor your guests will never forget.)

  • Have a silent disco or karaoke party instead of a traditional dance party.

  • Hire a tarot card reader, or fortune-teller.

  • Hire an actor to be a guest impersonator and have your real guests announce their best guesses on who the imposter is at dinner.

  • Hire an onsite typewriter poetry artist to create on the spot poems for your guests.

    Details:

  • Have an audio guest book, or a type writer guest book.

  • Write handwritten letters to each of your guests and put them in place of a traditional seating chart or party favor.

  • Hire an artist to draw portraits of each of your guests ahead of the wedding, and have them in place of a traditional seating chart. This doubles as an amazing party favor.

    Food:

  • Have food trucks instead of a sit down dinner.

  • If you’re planning a laid back whimsical style wedding somewhere like a garden, forested area, or vineyard offer individual picnic baskets pre-packed with food and drinks for your guests to grab and go find a scenic spot to enjoy.

  • Tacos & margaritas

  • On site wood fired pizza

  • Sushi station

    Venues:

Choosing a unique wedding venue can be one of the easiest ways to make your wedding feel more unique. Think about booking an unconventional venue like an art gallery, quirky restaurant, boat, roller-skating rink, or rooftop bar. Here is a list of some of my favorite unique venues, and some that I’d love to shoot at.
